Right about the time that Google eliminated their "don't be evil" motto a few years ago, I finally began to lose hope in them, after years of unbounded enthusiasm. It was kind of a final straw thing.
From then til now, my previous superfan enthusiasm with all their amazing technology -- which held firm for so long -- has slowly, incrementally, faded. I still use plenty of their tech and will for years to come -- they do a great job -- but the joy is diminished because.... well, their dark side looms in the background of everything they do now. I could rant in detail about my concerns, but plenty of others are already doing so, so I'll keep it brief (even though this is probably by length the longest post I've ever posted.)
I recently stumbled upon this list of 400 websites officially being censored by Google, and recognized a few. Most of them I have no idea about. I am astounded that a quick skim of these sites reveals a strong focus on things like natural foods. What in the world does Google have against healthy food? Electronic Frontier Foundation? What in the world is wrong with eff.org to get it on this list? Phys.org? Really?
A list like this makes me want to go visit all these sites just to see what's so bad they need to be downgraded from the search engines, but there's only so many hours in a day.
If you've followed this blog since its beginning, you'll note that I was enthusiastic about Google back in the day. Not so anymore. Yes, I know it's not a black and white issue, and I'm sure I don't agree with many things published on many of these sites, but I'm equally sure there is a lot of good quality information on some of these sites being buried with their censorship. What in tarnation could be wrong with a site dedicated to physics?
Here's the list, more than 400 sites (and growing, of course). I'm just a small drop in the ocean, but hopefully at least one more backlink to these sites will be useful somehow.
